Tile floors are just as classic and hygienic as wood floors but require far less maintenance. Though you might think only of ceramic when you think of tiles, you can choose from porcelain, glass and stone tiles, as well. Ceramic tiles are made from clay and are fired in a kiln; they can be glazed or unglazed. Porcelain tiles, which are often confused with stone tiles, have also been forged in flame. Both of these types of tile come in just about any color, pattern, shape and size.

Stone tiles are cut from rock and polished. Travertine, marble and granite are popular types of stone used in flooring. Though once thought of as the floors of kings and castles, modern production makes stone floors much more affordable for the rest of us. Durability and wear varies by material, but all are fire- and water-resistant if properly finished and installed.
